CON OJOS DE MUJER
Dear Mr. Bush
Bienvenido y permítame decirle unas cositas.

Como guatemalteca le doy la bienvenida y permítame platicarle unas cositas. Amo a su país y siempre he admirado su justicia y libertad. Igualmente amo a mi país y a su gente, a pesar de tanto dolor, miseria y turbulencias. Hoy quiero rogarle por dos cosas que duelen:

1) Los guatemaltecos que emigraron a Estados Unidos lo hicieron buscando una mejor condición de vida. No son gente mala, son simplemente gente necesitada. Por eso emigraron, exponiendo su vida, y aceptan trabajar aun en lo más bajo.

Recuerde a los peregrinos de Inglaterra que emigraron en l620 y formaron lo que hoy son los Estados Unidos de América. Ellos también buscaban mejor vida. Por favor, interceda para que se establezca el sistema legal que les permita vivir y trabajar en los Estados Unidos con dignidad humana. Dios bendecirá su país. “No maltratarás ni oprimirás al extranjero, porque también vosotros fuisteis extranjeros...” (Ex. 22:21).

2) Los cambios climáticos aumentan. De sobra sabemos las causas y qué falta para prevenir mayores daños. Falta que EE.UU. firme el Protocolo de Kioto e implemente inmediatamente la reducción de gases contaminantes. Piense que la Tierra es nuestra casa universal, su destrucción afectará a todos por igual, aunque sea el país más poderoso del mundo. “De Dios son los cielos y lo más alto de los cielos, la tierra y todo lo que hay en ella…” (Deut. 10:14).

As a Guatemalan woman I welcome you. I love your country; I went to school there and have always admired your justice and freedom. Likewise, I love my country and our people, in spite of our constant suffering, needs and turmoils. I beg you now for two things that hurt:

1) The Guatemalans who migrated to the USA were looking for better life conditions. They are not bad people, just needy people. That is why they migrated, exposing their lives, and accepting even the oddest jobs.

Remember the pilgrims migrating from England in 1620, who became the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. They too were looking for a better life. Please, intercede for the immigrants so that the USA will enact a legal system to allow them to live and work there with human dignity. May God Bless America. “You shall not wrong a foreigner or oppress him, for you were foreigner...” (Ex. 22:21).

2) The climatic changes are increasing. We know the reason and how to help prevent greater damage. Please sign the Kyoto Protocol and immediately implement reduction of polluting emissions. Think that the Earth is home to all mankind; destruction will affect all alike, even the most powerful nations on the planet. “Behold, to God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it...” (Deut. 10:14).
