Muerte por selfie: 259 personas fallecen accidentalmente en 7 años en busca del autorretrato perfecto
Vishnu Viswanath, de 29 años, y Meenakshi Moorthy, de 30, estaban casados, eran de origen indio y vivían en EE.UU.

Eran conocidos por sus blogs de viajes en los que relataban sus aventuras por distintas partes del mundo.

Y en una de sus entradas recientes en su cuenta de Instagram, habían insistido en su deseo de tomarse fotos en lugares peligrosos.

Un portavoz del parque, Jamie Richard, informó que los cuerpos de Viswanath y Moorthy fueron hallados en un área rocosa cerca del mirador conocido como Punto Taft.

Ubicado a unos 900 metros de altura, éste ofrece una vista única del parque y se ha convertido en un lugar predilecto para fotos románticas y peticiones de matrimonio.

Pero, aunque todo indica que ese fue el caso, las autoridades que investigan el caso admitieron que tal vez nunca se pueda confirmar si lo que causó la caída por el peñasco fue el intento detomarse una selfie.

“Todavía no sabemos qué provocó la caída”, le dijo Richard al diario local San Francisco Chronicle.

“Estamos intentando comprender lo que pasó. Tal vez nunca lo sepamos, pero, por lo que vimos, las muertes ocurrieron de forma trágica”, agregó.

“Obsesionados por viajar”

La pareja tenía un blog titulado “Holidays and HappilyEverAfters” (Vacaciones y felices para siempre), en los que se auto describían como “obsesionados por viajar”.

En su blog, Moorthydecía que era una “andariega con cabello de sirena que ama bailar con las palabras”, mientras que su marido era un “capitán creativo que sorprende a todos con sus habilidades fotográficas fantasmagóricas”.

La pareja se había casado hace cuatro años en el estado de Kerala, de acuerdo al relato del hermano de Viswanath, Jishnu.

Él trabajaba como ingeniero en la empresa de sistemas Ciscoy por razones laborales estaba planeando mudarse a California desde Nueva York, donde vivían.

Y fue el mismo Jishnu quien le dijo a la agencia AP que aparentemente la pareja cayó por el barranco cuando intentaba tomarse una selfie, después de montar el trípode cerca de la orilla del acantilado.

Conscientes de los riesgos

Lo curioso es que, en marzo de este año, la pareja había alertado a sus 14 mil seguidores en Instagram sobre el riesgo de tomarse selfies en lugarespeligrosos.

“A muchos de nosotros nos tienta la idea tomarnos una foto en el borde de los acantilados y rascacielos, pero ¿sabían que las ráfagas de viento pueden ser FATALES?” escribieron junto a una foto tomada en el Gran Cañón.

“¿Será que nuestra vida vale una foto?”, se preguntaron públicamente en las redes.

El creciente número de personas que mueren en el mundo por tomarse selfies
En septiembre, un joven israelí perdió la vida al caer por un peñasco cuando también intentaba tomarse una autofoto en otra zona del parque.

Un reporte reciente reveló que unas 259 personas murieron entre 2011 y 2017 en su intento de tomarse una selfie en lugares peligrosos. Sin embargo, los autores de la investigación señalaron que esa cifra podría ser mayor.
