En el rubro a mejor director sorprende la presencia  de Mel Gibson, que vuelve tras las cámaras con la película Hacksaw Ridge, en el mismo apartado también aparece Denzel Washington gracias al filme Fences, en el que también actúa.

Pocas veces una cinta ganadora de los Critics’ Choice se ha ido con las manos vacías en la entrega del Óscar, por lo que estos galardones se convierten en un indicador de  cuáles  serían las propuestas que más sonarán durante la próxima temporada de premios del séptimo arte.
